Fall Home Maintenance Checklist to Prevent Water Damage

Before the Northwest rainy season, run through this fall checklist to protect your home from leaks and flooding.
Gutters and downspouts
Clear leaves and debris and make sure downspouts discharge at least 4–6 feet from your foundation.
Roof and flashing
Check for missing shingles and gaps around chimneys, vents, and skylights.
Grading and drainage
Soil should slope away from the house. Pooling water near the foundation is a red flag.
Appliances
Inspect water heater, washing machine hoses, and dishwasher lines. Replace rubber hoses with braided steel.
